Sveinbjörg Þórhallsdóttir graduated in 1995 as a dancer from Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, NY and took her master degree in Choreography from Fontys University, Holland in 2008. She has worked as a professional dancer and choreographer for dance and theatre productions in all major theatres in Reykjavík and abroad. Sveinbjörg worked as a professor and a programme director of Contemporary Dance Practices at the department of Performing Arts, Iceland University of the Arts from 2011-2021.
An important strand in Sveinbjörg’s research is the emphasis on unconventional dance and performance arts projects collaborating with different artists with diverse capacity. The research interest lies in the experimentation of the content and the form of the work in an active dialogue with collaborators. She is interested in the artistic process and how creativity can increase while working with different artistic voices. Sveinbjörg is also an experienced choreographer having worked with many directors on plays in theatres in Reykjavík.
Sveinbjörg was one of the founders of the Reykjavík Dance Festival (in 2002) as well as the Association of Dance House in Reykjavík (in 2010), which runs ateliers for choreographers “Reykjavík Dance Atelier” and currently holds a position as a board member.
Sveinbjörg is a certified Romana’s Pilates instructor and a yoga teacher (200 hours) from High Vibe Yoga teacher training, Ubud, Bali.
